The Town of Leland is holding a public meeting on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, to consider the rezoning of a 220-acre area currently zoned as LE-R-6 (Medium Density Residential). The proposal seeks to change the zoning to LE-FCZ, a FlexCode Zone, which could significantly impact the future development of this area.

The subject land, located along NC Highway 133, adjacent to the Westport PUD and the Jackeys Creek neighborhood, is owned by Jackeys Creek Investors, LLC. This proposed rezoning has raised concerns among our members regarding its potential impact on the infrastructure, environment, and overall character of the surrounding areas.

We strongly encourage all concerned citizens to attend this meeting, voice your opinions, and stand up for responsible development in our community. The public meeting will take place at 6:00 p.m. at Leland Town Hall, and your participation could make a crucial difference in shaping the outcome.

If you’re unable to attend, you can still submit your written comments up to 24 hours before the meeting via the Town of Leland’s public comment portal here.

Let’s ensure that our community’s voice is heard loud and clear on this important matter. For any questions, you can contact the Planning Manager, Ashli Barefoot, at (910) 332-4819 or via email at abarefoot@townofleland.com.

Together, we can advocate for a future that balances growth with the preservation of our region’s natural and community resources.

Balancing Growth and Preservation: Leland’s Controversial Waterfront Purchase [WECT] https://brunswickpreservation.org/balancing-growth-and-preservation-lelands-controversial-waterfront-purchase/ Fri, 01 Dec 2023 17:59:52 +0000 https://brunswickpreservation.org/?p=20234 The recent purchase of a prime waterfront property by the Town of Leland, amidst a complex backdrop of regional politics and land-use controversies, has brought to light significant concerns and opportunities for Brunswick County. This acquisition, following a period of aggressive annexation and a subsequent legislative moratorium to curb Leland’s expansion, reveals a tense dynamic between Leland and its neighboring communities, particularly Belville. As the 2003 settlement agreement between these towns nears its expiration, the future of land development in the area hangs in the balance.

This property, bought post-moratorium and amid failed development attempts and annexation efforts, represents more than just a piece of land; it’s a symbol of the ongoing tug-of-war for control and development in Brunswick County. With Leland’s history of rapid growth and expansionist policies now challenged by legislative action and inter-town rivalries, the fate of this waterfront property becomes a focal point for debate.

In this context, the push for transforming this property into a public park is not just about preserving green space; it’s about steering the course of development towards more community-centric and sustainable approaches. By advocating for the conversion of this contentious piece of land into a public park, Brunswick County residents and officials can champion a vision of development that prioritizes communal benefit, environmental conservation, and balanced growth over unchecked expansion and contentious land grabs.

The article ‘The Land War in Brunswick’ delves into Leland’s aggressive expansion strategy, marked by rapid annexation and development. This strategy, while bolstering the town’s tax base and growth, has raised concerns about the preservation of rural areas and the balance of power within the region. The situation reached a turning point when Senator Bill Rabon intervened, leading to a legislative ban on Leland’s further annexation.
