About BPS

Our Purpose

The Brunswick Preservation Society is a non-profit organization that has emerged in response to a recognized need for a collective voice to represent community concerns regarding predatory development throughout our rapidly growing region. The many charms of Brunswick County – its sparkling coastlines, rich marsh life, and relatively untapped lush inland areas – have enticed numerous new residents to our shores. With this burgeoning interest, developers have identified the profit potential of extensive development within our borders. While economic growth can be a welcomed attribute, it must be balanced with ecological considerations and pursued thoughtfully to preserve the region’s unique culture and lifestyle. BPS serves as a platform for uniting the voices of concerned Brunswick County residents, regardless of the municipality or governance in which the incursion may occur.

Our Approach: Empowering Change

At the Brunswick Preservation Society, we believe in the power of unity and action. Joining forces with us offers concerned community members the opportunity to actively shape the future of Brunswick County. Our collective strength was boldly demonstrated during BPS’s inception when we successfully thwarted a questionable attempt to build a multi-million dollar apartment complex through dubious annexation and rezoning maneuvers. This pivotal moment not only halted that specific development but also awakened a shared resolve among residents to combat future ill-fated projects.

While community engagement and media advocacy play vital roles, it became evident that legal representation often becomes the linchpin. Here’s where the Brunswick Preservation Society comes into play. As a non-profit comprised of dedicated community members, we possess a distinctive ability to provide both a legal response and a potent deterrent against inappropriate development and land use. Together, we forge a path towards a sustainable future for our cherished county.

Our Connection: Home, Sweet Home

The Brunswick Preservation Society’s roots run deep within the fertile soil of Brunswick County. Our commitment and efforts are steadfastly dedicated to this very land we call home. For a comprehensive view of our current focal points, we invite you to explore the “Active Concerns” page. Delve into our journey of inception and the issues we’ve courageously tackled by navigating to our “History” page.

Our Purpose: Preserving Ecology and Responsible Growth

The Brunswick Preservation Society directs its attention towards issues that threaten the ecological well-being of our region or hinder the pursuit of responsible economic advancement. While growth inevitably leaves a footprint on nature, the unchecked pursuit of certain endeavors driven by unchecked avarice and extravagance poses a reckless, short-term approach that warrants discouragement. Equally crucial is the role of sustainable economic development, which, when executed thoughtfully, can even fortify the ecological harmony of our surroundings. However, when pursued haphazardly, it often overlooks essential infrastructure requirements crucial for a growing population, such as accessible transportation, education, and healthcare.

Our focus is particularly attuned to the vulnerable 133/River Road corridor, a hotspot where conflicting municipal interests intersect, and the valuable natural resources are susceptible to exploitation.
