Our Focused Areas: Preserving Ecology and Responsible Growth

The Brunswick Preservation Society directs its attention towards issues that threaten the ecological well-being of our region or hinder the pursuit of responsible economic advancement. While growth inevitably leaves a footprint on nature, the unchecked pursuit of certain endeavors driven by unchecked avarice and extravagance poses a reckless, short-term approach that warrants discouragement. Equally crucial is the role of sustainable economic development, which, when executed thoughtfully, can fortify the ecological harmony of our surroundings. However, when pursued haphazardly, it often overlooks essential infrastructure requirements crucial for a growing population, such as accessible transportation, education, and healthcare.

Our focus is particularly attuned to the vulnerable 133/River Road corridor, a hotspot where conflicting municipal interests intersect, and the valuable natural resources are susceptible to exploitation.

West Gate Park

Although slated by the Town of Leland as a reprieve for nature while providing a recreational and educational space, West Gate Park was brazenly decimated by predatory development. The Town of Leland has stated they intend to recreate the refuge, but the drastic change in land use intentions has left many residents concerned about the leadership involved in matters of city planning and land use.

Future development of 964 River Road

This 34-acre parcel nestled along the Brunswick River remains a coveted stretch of undeveloped land. Although currently providing refuge for a plethora of wildlife, it would be foolhardy to believe the parcel will remain untainted. Recently, a drastic expansion of new construction along this stretch of road poses a sincere threat to resident livability, traffic safety, and the capacity of land use. These concerns make the intentions of developers eyeing 964 all the more important to remain watchful of.

Update (November 15, 2023):
In a significant development for our region, the Town of Leland has recently completed the purchase of a key piece of waterfront property located at 964 River Road. This strategic acquisition has been the subject of much discussion among local residents and stakeholders, given its prominent location along the N.C. 133 corridor, near the Brunswick River. The property, known for its natural beauty including one of the last live oak ridges in the area, has been listed for public sale and now falls under the jurisdiction of the Town of Leland.

As guardians of our community’s growth and natural heritage, the Brunswick Preservation Society sees a crucial opportunity in the Town of Leland’s recent acquisition of the waterfront property at 964 River Road. This pivotal moment is not just about a parcel of land; it’s a chance for us, as a united community, to assertively encourage Leland to prioritize public good over unchecked development. We envision a future where this space becomes a community treasure – perhaps a serene waterfront park, reflecting our commitment to preserving our beautiful landscape and fostering a sense of shared community. The Society is prepared to lead this dialogue, urging Leland to make a decision that aligns with the long-term interests and welfare of our entire community.

Proposed Development Along Wetlands in the N.C. 133 Corridor

The wetlands surrounding the N.C. 133 corridor are facing a significant threat from a proposed rezoning effort that could allow for aggressive development in this environmentally sensitive area. These wetlands serve as critical ecosystems, supporting a diverse range of wildlife and acting as natural buffers against flooding. However, with developers eyeing the area for potential high-density projects, there is a growing concern about the impact on these fragile lands.

The Brunswick Preservation Society is deeply concerned that unchecked development could lead to the destruction of these wetlands, disrupting local ecosystems and exacerbating infrastructure issues like traffic and water management. We are actively working to raise awareness and oppose any efforts that prioritize profit over environmental stewardship. By rallying community support and working with local experts, we aim to protect these valuable natural resources from irreversible harm.

Eagles Island

With the historic U.S. North Carolina battleship permanently tucked amongst its coastline, Eagles Island is a unique gem in North Carolina’s crown. A home to a multitude of flora and fauna, some of which are listed as threatened or endangered, this historical landmark has been targeted by developers despite multiple municipalities recognizing the importance of its preservation. Join BPS in supporting the movement to ensure further development is unable to occur.

After hearing and considering the concerns expressed by many citizens about the stresses of rapid growth along the N.C. 133 corridor, the Town Council has taken the opportunity to obtain this property, which includes one of the last live oak ridges in the area that abuts the Brunswick River. The Town will seek public input in the future as it determines the best use for the site.
