Urgent Rezoning Proposal: Your Voice Is Needed

Fellow community members, we have been alerted to a new rezoning proposal that demands our attention and action. The Town of Leland is holding a public meeting on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, to consider the rezoning of a 220-acre area currently zoned as LE-R-6 (Medium Density Residential). The proposal seeks to change the zoning to LE-FCZ, a FlexCode Zone, which could significantly impact the future development of this area.

The subject land, located along NC Highway 133, adjacent to the Westport PUD and the Jackeys Creek neighborhood, is owned by Jackeys Creek Investors, LLC. This proposed rezoning has raised concerns among our members regarding its potential impact on the infrastructure, environment, and overall character of the surrounding areas.

We strongly encourage all concerned citizens to attend this meeting, voice your opinions, and stand up for responsible development in our community. The public meeting will take place at 6:00 p.m. at Leland Town Hall, and your participation could make a crucial difference in shaping the outcome.

If you’re unable to attend, you can still submit your written comments up to 24 hours before the meeting via the Town of Leland’s public comment portal here.

Let’s ensure that our community’s voice is heard loud and clear on this important matter. For any questions, you can contact the Planning Manager, Ashli Barefoot, at (910) 332-4819 or via email at abarefoot@townofleland.com.

Together, we can advocate for a future that balances growth with the preservation of our region’s natural and community resources.

Wetlands cannot be “engineered” by developers. Once they are gone, they are gone. Preserve our natural wetlands!
